Children & Adolescents
Counseling for ages 6 and up.
Being a kid isn’t easy!
Kids and teens face big emotions, pressures, and transitions that can feel like “it’s too much”.
But counseling for kids isn’t just about talking! It is about engaging them in ways that feel natural and comfortable. Through art activities, games, play therapy, and books, kids can express their thoughts and emotions in ways that words alone can’t always capture. This often looks like: molding feelings with play-dough, role playing scenarios with figurines, or working through emotions in a story. These therapeutic activities are developmentally appropriate and create a place for self-expression.
I’ve found that when their hands are busy, their minds and hearts more freely open up, allowing them to process emotions, build coping skills, and gain confidence in a way that is fun and engaging!
The Most Common Reasons for Counseling
-
A child may feel overwhelmed by fears, stress, or constant “what ifs” that make daily life difficult.
-
When anger, frustration, or sadness feels too big to handle, it can impact a child’s relationships and daily routines.
-
All behavior is communication. Struggling to follow rules, tolerate frustration, or listen can create tension at home and at school.
-
Adjusting to divorce, loss, or new family dynamics can bring big emotions that feel hard to process.
-
When a child struggles to feel confident in who they are, it can affect their happiness and interactions with others.
-
Experiencing difficult life events can leave a child feeling lost, scared, or emotionally overwhelmed.
My belief is that counseling is most effective when parents and the counselor work collaboratively together to support the child.
The initial session is specifically for parents only. This gives us the opportunity to get to know each other, share important information, and set clear goals for the counseling process. While working with your child, I will share progress about how they are doing and strategies to help them at home. However, the specific content and details of our sessions will remain confidential, except in cases where there are safety concerns. Additional parent sessions are often helpful.
